Food is medicine. It always has been. But, we now have a more sophisticated, mechanistic understanding of the science backing this claim. Instead of solely understanding the pharmacology of pharmaceutical agents, we understand how nutraceuticals (natural agents) are potent medicaments.
All of the newly published research is focusing on how our health starts in the gut. We now know that gut health is primed by the types of food we eat. It also depends on the quality of those food groups. What we eat can dispose us towards disease. Or, our food has the capacity to heal.
