How Salt Water Mouth Rinse Benefits the Oral Microbiome

The best mouthwash recommendation is hands down a SALT WATER RINSE!

Salt as medicine is an age-old remedy going back to biblical times. As a mouthwash, salt water rinses are natural, safe, affordable, readily accessible, and culturally acceptable for routine use to combat dysbiosis!

It has been an established ally of the dental field for quite some time. It’s not bactericidal (completely kills bacteria). Instead, salt water rinses are bacteriostatic, meaning it prevents the growth of certain bacteria but does NOT kill all bacteria — hence maintaining the oral microbiome!

And let's not forget just how important the oral microbiome is, see the following post below for a refresher:

Saltwater rinses are often used after surgical interventions in dentistry to help accelerate the wound-healing process. It has been ubiquitously recommended after tooth extractions & suggested after major periodontal surgeries due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

It has also been used to effectively assist with symptoms of the common cold and soar throats. In fact, saltwater rinses have broad-spectrum effects against numerous viruses. Part of this is due to white blood cells’ ability to generate hypochlorous acid (HOCl) due to the abundance of chloride (Cl) ions given off by NaCl. Recent studies using nebulized hypertonic saline solutions are showing that this is a protective and palliative remedy for the common cold.

I personally LOVE Redmond Real Salt due to the company sourcing their salt from ancient sea beds. This salt has minimal micro-plastic contamination. It is a certified kosher salt. And they have their salt 3rd party tested for transparency. Redmond also has trace amounts of magnesium with sodium & chloride. You can get this incredible salt on Amazon here (please note that if you choose to purchase through this affiliate link, I will receive a small commission at no additional cost to you).

I personally have used 1 teaspoon of @Redmond real salt and 1 cup of water as a mouthwash for my own oral hygiene. I gargle for 30 secs to 1 min then spit it into the sink. I’ve also placed it in my @BURST Water flosser.

Please note that it isn’t something you need to do every day. I’d recommend using it if you are feeling under the weather, have red puffy bleeding gums or undergoing dental treatment.

Leaky Gum Syndrome Leads to Dysbiosis of the Microbiome
