Leaky Gum Syndrome Leads to Dysbiosis of the Microbiome

The VAST amount of information devoted to gut health and the gut microbiome has elevated our understanding of how to address issues related to overall health. The gut-brain axis is talked about frequently in the #functionalmedicine space. Something frequently overlooked is the mouth-mind-body connection. The digestive system starts in the mouth!

Everyone is talking about “leaky gut syndrome” but have you heard about leaky GUM syndrome? Both are examples of dysbiosis of the microbiome. Bleeding gums are a visual indication of microorganisms leaking into your bloodstream, predisposing you to systemic chronic inflammation.

Most diseases of the mouth are due to lifestyle habits and environmental factors, not genetics. The main triggers include mouth breathing, inflammatory processed foods, malnutrition, and poor oral hygiene habits.

When the oral environment is out of balance, the oral microbiome shifts towards a less diverse ecosystem. Gum diseases like periodontal disease destroy the bone that holds your teeth in place. I have extracted many teeth from people due to this disease. It starts with gingivitis and eventually becomes chronic if not addressed.

The FANTASTIC news is that leaky gum syndrome is reversible! Some of the top ways to reverse inflammation are regular use of an electric toothbrush, flossing, salt water rinses, nasal breathing, and eating an anti-inflammatory diet. Find a healthcare team that understands these principles and get regular cleanings!

The health of your mouth is linked to your whole body. Healthy gums are snug and hug around the teeth. A healthy oral microbiome and healthy gums fight sickness and inflammation. All of these recommendations can prime your body toward resilient health and regenerative healing.

Stay tuned in the next post where I give a quick reference for my high-yield anti-inflammatory food recommendations ✌🏽
